This month Mijas hosted an event for the European Footgolf  Tour at the Cerrado del Águila Golf Club. Footgolf is a growing sporting trend that combines soccer kicks at the tee, the approach and green, with with the aim to hit a target hole of 40 centimetres. For Mijas it was a great opportunity to establish itself as a benchmark for the sport on the Costa del Sol with the participation of players from a range of different continents, many of them retired professional players who take advantage of their technical skills to make the hole in as few touches as possible.

The event was divided into two categories, junior and adult, with no entry requirements necessary, as indicated by one of the organizers of the event, Fernando Lago, "it is an open and is open to the participation of the whole world, although it is true that it is expected that participants with calibre will take part.”

Mijas already boasts a European Footgolf Champion. Juan Antonio Montes, recently received recognition as an outstanding athlete from the Mijas council and has been supplied with the necessary facilities to practice his sport.

Currently, Footgolf is not considered a professional sport, although it continues to fight for such recognition. So much so that retired football players interested in the sport are moving it all over the world, showcasing it in Hungary, Holland, Argentina and Italy. As a result, the event in Mijas benefitted from the presence of renowned athletes such as José Antonio González Padilla, as well as some of the Málaga C.F. team.
