Spain has overtaken the US and is now the second most visited country in the whole world, with a staggering 82 million international visitors having stayed last year alone, according to figures from the UN World Tourism Organisation.

Evidently, tourism in Spain is thriving like never before. The Spanish Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, announced that the forecast for tourism this year is very bright. The country expects to see as many as 30.4 million tourists between the months of July and September, with the opportunity of receiving even more throughout the rest of the year[1].

In 2017, income from tourism increased by 12% from the previous year and saw a 1.5% increase in spending per tourist. This increase has created 77,501 new jobs in Spain in 2017[2].

Tourism increasing in the Province of Málaga

The province of Málaga is benefitting from this increase in popularity, with as many as 18.5 million passengers arriving at Málaga airport in 2017, which represents a 11.7% increase since the previous year[3]. This is also evident in the rise in hotel bookings, which according to INE increased by 6.6% from 2016 to 2017. This increase in visitors has had a positive effect on the province’s residential tourism as well. “Residential tourism” is titled as such for those purchasing and occupying a second home.

It’s not only the summer months that bring the tourists in, Málaga is becoming significantly more popular in the winter months too. In January 2017, Marbella had 28,630 visitors which was a 18.5% increase from January in the previous year[4], and according to INE 74% of the visitors were from countries outside of Spain. This incredible increase in visitors has had a knock-on effect on rentals. Rental prices in Marbella saw an estimated 20.8% increase from January 2017 to January 2018[5].

Rise in property prices

With Spain’s booming popularity, property prices are increasing too. The property prices in Marbella have doubled since 2011[6], making investment in the Málaga province a clever move. Property in the areas surrounding Marbella, such as Estepona and Benahavís are also benefitting from a price hike.
