Southern Spain is already a popular destination for tourism, a firm favourite amongst conventional holiday makers and health tourists looking for cost effective medical treatment and the opportunity to recuperate in the sunshine.

Currently around 9 million people arrive on the Costa del Sol for health related reasons and there is potential for further growth, a fact that hasn’t escaped the notice of Elias Bendodo, the President for the Costa del Sol Tourism Board. Conservative estimates put revenue from health tourism alone over the next few years to be in the region of 300€ million.

With this in mind, Bendodo is working with the Spanish Health and Tourism Ministers to introduce a visa, specifically for health tourists. However, the main target market is northern Europeans, from Holland, Germany, France and the UK, already familiar with the Costa del Sol’s many attractions and all year round warm climate.

The Tourism & Health Spain Group, a consortium of hotels, travel agencies, spas and medical facilities plus various other suppliers offering related services, has already been created as part of the initiative.

If you are interested in visiting the Costa del Sol for business, pleasure or medical purposes, Siesta Real Estate has a wide selection of short and long term accommodation available for rent.
